Hypnotherapy FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

🧬 The Science of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is more than simple relaxation. It is a focused state of attention that has been widely studied for its ability to influence thoughts, emotions, behaviours and perceptions.

Research suggests that during hypnosis, people can become more absorbed in their internal experience and more responsive to therapeutic suggestions. This focused state may help individuals develop new perspectives, strengthen helpful behaviours, reduce unwanted habits and improve emotional wellbeing.
Modern neuroscience continues to explore how hypnosis affects the brain. Studies have shown changes in areas associated with attention, emotional processing and pain perception, helping explain why hypnotherapy is increasingly used as a complementary approach for stress management, confidence building, habit change and emotional resilience.

When combined with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and other evidence-informed techniques, hypnotherapy can provide a practical and effective framework for creating meaningful, lasting change.

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a natural and focused state of attention that allows you to become deeply relaxed while remaining aware and in control. Many people describe it as similar to those moments just before falling asleep or shortly after waking, when the mind is calm, receptive and focused.
During hypnosis, attention becomes more concentrated, making it easier to explore thoughts, emotions and behaviours that may be operating outside of conscious awareness. This can help support positive change by strengthening helpful patterns and reducing the influence of habits, beliefs or emotional responses that no longer serve you.
At Healing Mind Cy, Clinical Hypnotherapy is used as a safe, collaborative process to help clients create meaningful and lasting change. Whether your goal is to reduce anxiety, build confidence, overcome unwanted habits or improve emotional wellbeing, hypnotherapy provides an effective framework for personal growth and transformation.
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree when they are willing to participate and follow the process. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention that many people enter regularly in everyday life, often without realising it.
The ability to experience hypnosis is not related to being weak-minded, gullible or easily influenced. In fact, people who are able to focus, use their imagination and engage with the process often respond very well to hypnotherapy.
The depth of hypnosis can vary from person to person, but deep trance is not required for positive change to occur. Whether someone experiences a light, medium or deeper level of hypnosis, therapeutic benefits can still be achieved.
Successful hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. If you are open to the experience and motivated to make positive changes, there is an excellent chance that hypnotherapy can be helpful for you.
Will I lose control during hypnosis?
No. One of the most common misconceptions about hypnosis is that it involves losing control, but the opposite is true. During hypnosis, you remain aware, conscious and in control throughout the entire session.
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and deep relaxation, not unconsciousness. You can speak, move, ask questions, adjust your position, or choose to end the session at any time if you wish.
You cannot be made to do anything that goes against your values, beliefs or personal boundaries. Clinical Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process in which we work together towards your goals, with your comfort, safety and consent always remaining the priority.
Many people are surprised to discover just how natural hypnosis feels. Rather than losing control, most clients experience a greater sense of focus, awareness and connection to their own inner resources.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Clinical Hypnotherapy is widely regarded as a safe and natural process when conducted by a properly trained practitioner. In fact, most people experience similar states of focused attention every day, such as becoming absorbed in a book, daydreaming, or being completely engaged in an activity.
During hypnosis, you remain aware of your surroundings and in control of your actions at all times. You cannot be made to do anything against your values, beliefs or wishes. Hypnotherapy is not mind control, and it is very different from the entertainment often seen in stage hypnosis.
At Healing Mind Cy, your comfort, safety and consent are always the priority. Sessions are collaborative, respectful and tailored to your individual needs, allowing you to explore change in a way that feels safe, supportive and empowering.

How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required varies from person to person and depends on your individual goals, circumstances and the nature of the issue being addressed.
Some people experience meaningful improvements within just a few sessions, particularly when working on specific goals such as confidence, motivation or certain habits. More complex or long-standing challenges may benefit from a longer-term approach that allows for deeper exploration and lasting change.
During your initial consultation, we will discuss your goals and create a personalised plan tailored to your needs. My aim is always to help you achieve your desired outcome as efficiently and effectively as possible, while ensuring the process remains supportive, ethical and focused on lasting results.
Progress is reviewed throughout our work together, allowing sessions to be adapted as your needs and goals evolve.

What should I expect in my first session?
Your first session is designed to help you feel comfortable, informed and confident about the process. It begins with a conversation about your goals, challenges and what you would like to achieve. This gives us an opportunity to understand your needs, answer any questions and develop an approach tailored specifically to you.
You'll also learn more about how hypnotherapy works, what to expect during the session, and have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or misconceptions you may have. There is no pressure and no judgment—just a supportive space focused on helping you move towards your desired outcome.
Depending on your goals and the time available, your first session may also include hypnosis, allowing you to experience the process for yourself. Most clients leave feeling more relaxed, informed and optimistic about their ability to create positive change.
Is hypnotherapy the same as meditation?
Not exactly. While both hypnotherapy and meditation can promote relaxation, focus and increased self-awareness, they are designed for different purposes.
Meditation is generally focused on cultivating awareness, mindfulness and presence in the moment. The aim is often to observe thoughts and experiences without judgment, helping to create a greater sense of calm and mental clarity.
Clinical Hypnotherapy is more goal-oriented and therapeutic. During hypnosis, you are guided into a focused state where the mind may become more receptive to positive suggestions, new perspectives and beneficial behavioural changes. This can help support goals such as reducing anxiety, building confidence, changing habits, overcoming fears and improving emotional wellbeing.
Both approaches can be valuable, but while meditation is primarily about awareness and observation, hypnotherapy is typically used to support specific personal, emotional or behavioural change.
Will I remember everything after the session?
Yes. Most people remember everything that happens during a hypnotherapy session. Hypnosis is not a state of unconsciousness or sleep; rather, it is a state of focused attention and deep relaxation where you remain aware of your surroundings and in control of your choices.
Many clients describe the experience as similar to becoming absorbed in a book, a film or a daydream. You are able to hear, think, respond and communicate throughout the session if needed.
Some people find that certain details become less vivid over time, much like the way ordinary memories can fade. However, the insights, learning and positive changes from the session can continue to develop both consciously and unconsciously as you move forward.
At all times, you remain in control and can choose to end the session or return to full alertness whenever you wish.
Can hypnotherapy help with burnout?
Yes. Hypnotherapy can be a valuable tool for managing and recovering from burnout. Through deep relaxation and focused therapeutic techniques, it may help calm the nervous system, reduce stress and release the mental and emotional tension that often contributes to exhaustion.
Burnout is frequently associated with prolonged stress, overwhelm, perfectionism, people-pleasing, excessive responsibility and a lack of recovery time. Hypnotherapy can help address these underlying patterns by supporting healthier emotional responses, improving resilience and encouraging more balanced ways of thinking and behaving.
Many clients report feeling calmer, more focused and better able to cope with daily demands after hypnotherapy. Sessions can also help improve sleep quality, strengthen boundaries, rebuild confidence and reconnect you with a greater sense of motivation, purpose and wellbeing.
